ABOUT
DASH
The mission of the District Alliance for Safe Housing, Inc. (DASH) is
to ensure access to safe and sustainable refuge for victims of domestic
violence through the development and management of safe housing and related
services, while increasing the capacity of other community-based organizations
to expand housing for victims throughout the District of Columbia.
DASH Goals
DASH is addressing the overwhelming lack of housing and social services
for victims of domestic violence and their children in the District by
providing safety and necessary resources. DASH helps women and children
rebuild their lives on their own terms. DASH has the following three goals:
- Develop safe housing for domestic violence victims and their families
to ensure safety from violence and promote living without fear of abuse;
- Deliver targeted housing resources to victims and their families to
improve access to safe, affordable housing; and,
- Provide training and technical assistance among community-based
programs to increase safe housing for victims and enhance the overall
well-being and safety for women and children in the District.
DASH Philosophy
DASH provides access, safety, and acceptance to victims of domestic violence
by providing a "low barrier" housing program that accommodates victims
regardless of disability, chemical addiction, immigration status or sexual
orientation.
Renovation of DASH's pilot housing program will incorporate principles
of universal and green design, so that the space will be a model facility
that provides a peaceful sanctuary from abuse that is accessible to all
victims. Program elements will address the complex issues that may stand
between women and a safe, stable future, including economic, emotional
and spiritual needs.
Safe housing--both for short-term emergency situations and longer-term
transitions--is the essential foundation for many women to rebuild their
lives. Research and evaluation of shelter programs consistently shows
that respite from the chaos and crisis of living with abuse allows women
to establish healthy and productive lives for themselves and their families.
Because there are far more domestic violence victims in need of housing
than this housing program can accommodate, DASH will also deliver targeted
and appropriate assistance to victims and their families seeking housing
by providing information and training on available housing resources and
collaborating with other domestic violence and victim service programs.
